The Private Pilot License requires a minimum of 40 hours of flight training with 20 of that being dual instruction. A minimum of 10 hours of solo time is required. Cessna 172s typically rent for $95 to $110 per hour, and instruction is $35 per hour.

Total costs for your license will vary (dependent on training time), but usually it will be between $5,000 and $7,000. This includes the cost for the written test and checkride cost.

To earn an instrument rating, you need a minimum of 50 hours cross country flight time (50 NM in between each stop), 40 hours of simulated or actual IMC time, plus 15 hours of dual instruction. You can get some or all of the 40 hours of instrument time with an appropriately rated pilot friend, or (much more expensive) fly it with the instructor. A written test and checkride are also required.
